If you play on tour, or if you’re headed in that direction, it’s probably really helpful to know about every little undulation in the green, the wind direction down to a degree, and to have A.I. suggest the ideal backspin and launch angle for each shot.
But if instead you’re playing a beat-up, 10-year-old Top Flight you found in the woods, and just trying to make it out of the day in the double digits, all of that is just noise. Just more stuff to clutter your brain while you try to make (what should be) a simple swing.
What you do need is some basic info to help you make better choices. Things like knowing there’s a creek over the hill that you can’t see. Or that the water ahead is only 170 out, so if you hit driver, you’re probably screwed. Or that it’s 130 yards to clear that bunker, so you’d better club up.
That’s the kind of stuff that saves a stroke here and there, and lets you finish the day feeling just a little bit better about your golf skills.
